The Hydroponic Crops Production Certificate Course is developed by the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Urban & Indoor Agriculture team and is designed for commercial growers, educators, home gardeners, Master Gardeners, and anyone interested in hydroponic systems and soil-free plant cultivation. The course is offered in person at the University of Nevada, Reno Extension in North Las Vegas, and consists of readings, lectures, and hands-on lab training from experts in urban horticulture. Master Gardeners who wish to work with the Hydroponics program must complete this course as part of the requirements for Advanced Certification in Hydroponics.
The course runs for six weeks on Thursdays, covering the following topics:
Week 1 (April 16, 2026): Fundamentals of hydroponic production — historical overview, advantages and disadvantages; plant morphology and anatomy; Deep Water Culture (DWC) systems. Lab: setting up a DWC hydroponic system.
Week 2 (April 23, 2026): Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Aeroponics, and Ebb and Flow systems. Lab: NFT & Aeroponic system.
Week 3 (April 30, 2026): Substrate culture; essential plant nutrients; solution pH & EC management. Lab: pH & EC testing.
Week 4 (May 7, 2026): Culture room environment (light, temperature, humidity, and air); pest and disease management in hydroponic systems. Lab: lighting test.
Week 5 (May 21, 2026): Harvesting; produce quality and safety. Lab: harvesting & cleaning a hydroponic system. (No class May 14, 2026.)
Week 6 (May 28, 2026): Final exam and course survey.
