Alumni Book Club: Spring Read

Reno

Free entry

In April, the Nevada Alumni Association Book Club begins reading How to Read a Book by Monica Wood. There is no cost to participate — you just need your own copy, available from any bookstore or library. Sign-up is available online.

Monica Wood is the author of four novels, including The One-in-a-Million Boy (2017 Nautilus Gold Award and New England Society fiction prize), Any Bitter Thing (21 weeks on the ABA extended bestseller list; Book Sense Top Ten pick), Ernie's Ark, and My Only Story (Kate Chopin Award finalist). She also wrote the memoir When We Were the Kennedys, which received the Maine Literary Award (2013) and the Sarton Women's Literary Award (2012).

How to Read a Book follows three characters whose paths cross at a Portland bookstore: Violet Powell, twenty-two and newly released from prison after a drunk-driving crash that killed a teacher; Harriet Larson, a retired English teacher who led Violet's prison book club; and Frank Daigle, a retired machinist grappling with the aftermath of personal tragedy. The novel centers on guilt, forgiveness, and unlikely friendship.
